Cactus is mainly divided into two categories, Christmas cactus and Easter Cactus, both plants are long lived and popular.

Over the past generations Christmas Cactus has been the favorite house plant for holiday season.

Christmas cactus is considered to be a tropical plant, it requires watering like any other tropical plant.

A good way of maintaining the plant is to water regularly and allow the top soil to dry before watering again.

Water provides humidity and cactus requires 50-60 percent of humidity. It is advise to place a glass or a container of water beside the plant.

Christmas Cactus Growing Stages

The plant begins to flower in January.

February/ March is known as the resting period. During this period be sure to keep plant in cool temperature (55 degree F). Water infrequently.

April/ May Treat normally, water the plant when the manure begins to dry out.

Summer, During the months of June, July, August and Mid September, relocate the pot in a shady place outdoor. Ensure that the plant receives sunlight in the spot.

October and Mid November ensure that the plant is kept in a cool area until the flower buds form again. Observe carefully then increase water and temperature.

Christmas Cactus flowering period starts in mid November to December. During this time feed the plant with water as normal and maintain a temperature of 55 degree F.

After Christmas the plant may lose leaves and may appear a bit weak. Don't worry about the appearance during this time. Allow the plant to rest for 30 days. provide limited water and place in a cool room
