Candles have long been a part of Christmas. They are believed to represent the birth of Christ and offer guidance and warmth at a time when much of the world is plunged in the bitter darkness of winter.

If you’re throwing a Christmas party, a Christmas Candle Centrepiece is a definite must have! Sitting on the dining table or fireplace mantle, the Christmas candle arrangement is a great decorative piece that adds a warm touch of the holiday spirit to any home. It can have one or more candles, and is often surrounded by a lush bed of winter greenery garnished with fruits of winter and other delightful garnishes. Fresh flowers accenting the greenery can also be used, however they may wither easily so make sure to keep their stems submerged in water.

If candles aren’t your style, you can try one of our fabulous Christmas fruit baskets. holidayfruitsPlace one, like the Holiday Fruits Basket, in the middle of a table decked with food for a holiday party. It’ll make the table even more bountiful!

If you’re the crafty type or have plenty of time, you can try making your own Christmas Candle Centrepiece. You’ll need the following:

sprigs of pine or fir
pine cones
decorative wired ribbon
two or three pillar candles
a plate that’s large enough to hold the candles
artificial snow
glue

wintergardencandleArrange the candles in the middle of the plate and then add the pine/fir. The sprigs should surround the candles, creating a bed on which the pine cones and ribbon can rest. You can use glue to secure the pine cones and ribbon. Then, sprinkle artificial snow on top of the sprigs, avoiding the tops of the candle.

If you’d like to choose fresh flowers, cut them short and use a shallow bowl so that they may be submerged in water. You can place a porous sponge in the bowl and stick the flowers into it to keep them in place.

Great colours to choose for centrepieces are gold, silver, red and white – basically anything that has a “Christmas-y” feel!

The Christmas Cactus

As the days get cooler in the Fall, it’s a good time to start thinking about Christmas plants. Whether as gifts or as decorations, these are the kinds of plants you should plan ahead on buying since any last minute shopping may prove less than fruitful.

The Christmas Cactus comes from a group of related holiday cacti of the genus Schlumbergera. These holiday cacti include the Thanksgiving Cactus and Easter Cactus. Although they may not be as popular as Poinsettias, it’s the beauty of their infrequently blooming flowers which make them the perfect Christmas gift.

The flowers of the Christmas Cactus come in magenta, white, pink and orange. The colours depend upon their variety and how they were cultivated. Some that were cultivated in England as long as 150 years ago still exist today.

The Christmas Cactus are originally from the tropical regions of Brazil, where they are known as Flor de Maio – literally May Flower. Unlike regular cactus, they don’t have the typical needles and what may look like leaves, are actually a kind of stem.

The Christmas Cactus is prized for boasting beautiful flowers that bloom very rarely. It often takes a good deal of effort to get them to bloom.

Just as there are as many ways of taking care of a Christmas Cactus, so too are the ways to make its flowers bloom. In a way, this is what makes them unique. Instead of depending upon a certain amount of light each day, they actually rely on the opposite.

Getting them to Bloomchristmascactusflower

For a Christmas Cactus to bloom, they require a certain number of hours of darkness over the course of a few weeks. During that time, they need to be kept away from direct sun light and dry heat sources like air vents. Watering should be kept to a minimum. Over-watering often leads to the end of the blooming period.

Under the best conditions, the flowers will remain in bloom for around six to eight weeks. Most people are usually able to keep them in bloom for a week. While this is what makes them such a challenge, it makes one appreciate their flowers all the more.
