Our Pledge on International Women’s Day – From Your Toronto Florist

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

The women, children and staff of Sandgate would like to thank you for your generous donation of beautiful flowers for the event, International Women’s Day on March 6th, 2010.

As you may be aware Sandgate Women’s Shelter has been in operation for 17 years and since that time has operated at full capacity. 13 years ago we opened one of our community program offices in Keswick and 2 years ago we opened the second one in Markham area. We also opened a new shelter in Richmond Hill last year. The programs other than shelter include transition services, outreach program, child witness program and volunteer program.

Thank you again for your on-going support.

Sincerely Yours,
Sandgate Women’s Shelter of York Region Inc.

Gift of NatureMarch 6 was International Women’s Day. Your local Toronto florist celebrated the occasion by hand delivering beautiful flower arrangements to Sandgate Women’s Shelter to honour the women in our community who have fallen victim to abuse.

Flowers can help improve the psychological state of its recipients, but we know that a donation of flowers isn’t enough. That’s why we continue to support Sandgate Women’s Shelter of York Region Inc. in their effort to provide a safe haven for female victims of abuse and their children. It’s part of our effort to give back to the community in which we thrive.

Our Trip to Canada Blooms: A Toronto Flower Extravaganza!

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Some of us here at 416-Florist managed to set aside some time in our hectic schedules to visit Canada Blooms this past weekend, the huge flower and garden festival at Exhibition Place. Although we didn’t get to the show in time to catch Martha Stewart on Saturday, we did manage to see everything else there was to offer, including the massive gardens, award winning flower arrangements and plants, as well as some unique floral designs. There were so many spring flowers, too!

Here are some photos of just a few things we saw.

Nice anthuriums. They were suspended upside down.

Award winning flower designs.

daffodils

Close up of daffodils. There were so many of them!

This was part of an installation for the Canadian Cancer Society.

pinkorchids

Orchids!

tulipgarden

Tulips were plentiful, in all sorts of colours and shapes.

A sample of cut flowers available.

tulipwall

More tulips!

It was fabulous to see all of the gardens in full bloom, however we were slightly disappointed about the amount of coverage that was given to the cut flower industry. There was plenty of information for gardeners, but not enough for florists.

This weekend is Nowruz, also spelled Norouz and Norooz, the beginning of the new year of Iranian descent, as well as many others who share the same heritage within the region (including other countries in the Middle East, Central Asia and the Caucasus) and around the world. The holiday has been celebrated for over 3,000 years with ancient PersianBasket of Plentyorigins.

Nowruz marks the vernal equinox, the first day of Spring. As a celebration heralding the first day of Spring, you can imagine that the holiday is intimately in tune with nature and the idea of rebirth, particularly following winter, when all is at rest.

Last month, the UN General Assembly recognized Nowruz, naming the day the “International Day of Nowruz” and
Fiesta-nutsincluded it in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The UN recognizes Nowruz on March 21 this year, although it does actually start later on in the day on the 20th. They even rescheduled talks to accommodate the holiday!

Looking for a gift to send to your recipient in honour of Nowruz? As a holiday devoted to the first day of Spring, nothing is better suited than flowers (and edible treats are also good)! We have a number of beautiful flower arrangements, potted plants, nut selections as well as fresh flower and fruit baskets. Flowers traditionally associated with Spring, such as tulips, hyacinths and daffodils, are ideal. Simply visit our online catalog for Toronto Norooz Flowers and Gifts, or call us to order. Even though Norooz is this weekend, it’s not too late to place your order! Our dedicated couriers will be promptly making deliveries all weekend around the Greater Toronto Area.
